The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
