From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, evil spirits, and dark forces growing in power within Dol-Makjar.
Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure are included.
The Warrior Group Revealed
The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of characters who will separate from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.
This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie).
The Reason for Division
With a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.
The Nature of the Warrior Group
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.
At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the group understands precisely where to proceed after a intense first encounter with the enemy group.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then paid off his obligations and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants retribution.
- Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous environment.
- Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
- Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the party access areas they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:
- The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
- The warrior and The healer turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the family.
This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the northern region in search of the antagonist.
Upcoming Developments
According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight participants to form the Seekers and Strategists groups.
Audiences can anticipate learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
